The Forest Service Ireland Case Study

Customer Name:The Forest Service

Location:Ireland

The Problem

The Forest Service is administrated by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and is responsible for ensuring the development of forestry within Ireland in a manner and to a scale that maximises its contribution to the national socio-economic well-being on a sustainable basis that is compatible with the protection of the environment.

The Forest Service had been using a paper based mapping system for their day-to-day activities but as per EU regulations these were required to be incorporated in the DAFM’s Integrated Administration and Control System (IACS) farm payments system.

What We Did

The project involved the scanning and printing of 15,600 maps and the data capture of associated information to a database. Information captured was derived from the maps and included contract numbers, plot numbers, claimed area (per polygon), total claimed area, number of plots, number of exclusions and the exclusion area. This information was sent along with the printed maps for graphical data capture to a GIS. In excess of 25,000 forest parcels polygons were migrated to the system.

The Benefits

  • Digitisation of the forestry parcels aids the forest service in calculation and administration of grant payments
  • The GIS can be used as a spatial decision support system/policy support system
