Kildare County Fire and Rescue Service Case Study

Customer Name:Kildare County Fire and Rescue Service

Location:Ireland

The Problem

Kildare County Fire and Rescue Service wanted to give their fire fighters access to vital information en-route to an incident. Date provided to fire crews was to include floor plans, hydrant locations and risk cards as well as all other necessary information.

Providing fire fighters with information en-route would allow fire incident commanders to plan more effectively and allow for a more coordinated response as information could be shared with other emergency services.

What We Did

Mallon Technology worked in partnership with Kildare Fire Service to develop a Vehicle Mounted Data System (VMDS). The system is GIS focused and is mounted in the cab of the fire engine on a touch screen device. Data is supplied for the system from Kildare Fire Service's existing Diamond Fire package which automatically updates via a wireless link whenever the fire engine is back in the station.

Layers were added to the GIS mapping screen which provided detailed information including, hydrant locations, railway crossing access points, motorway access points. GeoDirectory of residential properties was also integrated into the system, allowing the user to select a residential address to be navigated to.

GPS functionality was also included in the system and can show the location of the fire engine on the mapping screen. At the touch of a button a Sat-Nav system can automatically be started, calculating the fastest route to an incident, enabling the driver to easily navigate the truck to the location of an incident.

Additionally, the inclusion of a thermal printer allows for floor plans or attached files to be printed in the fire engine cab.
