Case Study

Rivers Agency

The Client

The Rivers Agency is a division of the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and is the statutory drainage and flood defence authority for Northern Ireland.  Its aim is to reduce the risk to life and damage to property from flooding from rivers and the sea and to undertake watercourse and coastal flood management in a sustainable manner.

The Problem

As part of their protection duties, the Rivers Agency maintains a collection of river maps and river level figures.

The Rivers Agency wanted to ensure all their maps and data were available to any staff member throughout the agency.  This would replace the need to locate and find the original hard copy maps or data.

What We Did

The project involved the scanning and indexing of 24,000 cross sectional river engineering drawings.  The drawings were A0 in size and were captured to 300dpi.

Additionally, the project involved the creation of a bespoke software system for the retrieval and use of the captured data.

The Benefits

  • Office space has been freed up
  • Digital backup of important files for disaster recovery
  • Documents are now easily searched for and retrievable at the touch of a button
  • Data can now be easily utilised to assist with decision making
