Mallon Technology

Case Study

Kildare County Council

The Problem

Kildare County Council had been operating a system used to manage application and exemptions from planning regulations.  The technology behind their system was being discontinued and Kildare County Council required a new system which improved on the functionality of their old system with a simple user–friendly interface.

What We Did

Mallon employed open technology to ensure our solution would be future proof.  Developed on GeoServer, SQL Server and OpenLayers we were able to create a rich web interface, utilising Ajax to provide a highly responsive system.

The system consisted of:

  • A web–based data entry interface to:
    • Capture and manage applications for exemptions from planning regulations
    • Generate letters used to correspond with applicants
  • A web–based mapping and digitisation interface to:
    • Locate developments using a gazetteer lookup
    • Utilise background mapping from a third–party web mapping service
    • Map the locations of developments for which exemptions have been requested
    • Import development boundaries from AutoCAD format files submitted by applicants

The Benefits

  • Legacy system protects Kildare County Council from any future technology withdrawals
  • Faster processing of applications
  • Visualisation of planning process
  • Reduced costs and resources saved
  • Extensible solution engaging possible integration with other Kildare County Council software
