National Ploughing Championships 2012

Tue 9th Oct 2012

In September two Mallon Technology staff, Justin Kidd and William McCann, attended this year’s National Ploughing Championships in New Ross. You can read about William’s experience of the day below.

On Wednesday the 26th of September Justin Kidd and I were lucky enough to attend one of Ireland’s largest festivals (without a Heineken stand or plastic cup in sight), the National Ploughing Championships. It is one of Europe’s largest agricultural trade shows with over 1,300 trade stands showcasing not just agricultural products, technology and services, but everything from cookery demonstrations to the latest fashions!

Having survived some heavy traffic, we eventually arrived at the site for this year’s event in Heathpark, New Ross. We were two of the 187,000 people who attended this year. We were greeted by an event in which competitors were attempting to break the world record in pole climbing (unfortunately the competitor we watched was unsuccessful). There were similar events held by various companies throughout the day showcasing their new machinery and products while entertaining the spectators.

My area of interest being forestry, Ivisited some of the many forestry companies on show and I also visited the Forest Service with whom we have a long-term working relationship. Their stand was located in the Department of Agriculture tent, which was one of the busiest tents Iattended that day. Meanwhile, Justin took the opportunity to check out the latest in GPS guidance and field surveying technology on display.

The National Ploughing Championships is an event that continues to go from strength to strength each year, and even the terrible weather didn’t stop spectators attending in their droves. I was delighted to attend this year and I am already looking forward to next year’s event. . . but hopefully with some sunnier weather!
