National Ploughing Championships 2015

Back in September, Niall Kennedy attended the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, just outside Portlaoise. You can read about Niall's experience on the day below.

" The 2015 event took place between the 22nd and 24th September in Ratheniska, for the 3rd consecutive year. This location has proved ideal for the Championship as it is close to many motorways and the main roads into Portlaoise. 2015 proved to be the biggest Ploughing Championships ever with 281,000 visitors attending over the three days and over 1,500 exhibitors showcasing not just agricultural products, technology and services but everything from cookery demonstrations to the latest fashions!

The Ploughing Championships is very diverse and there were stalls and attractions for everyone. In particular I was on the look out for any GIS or Remote Sensing related businesses. In attendance, were Geological Survey Ireland who were emphasizing the importance of the water table as well as Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSi) who will soon be known as Tailte Eiran once a merger with the Property Registration Authority of Ireland (PRA) and the Valluation Office (VO) is completed.

Photography companies had a big presence at this year's Championship with the use of drones in agriculture becoming a major talking point. Several companies were displaying aerial photography they had captured using drones, which were cable of capturing both RGA and infrared imagery to help determine the health of crops. This were able to be deployed, captured and analysed in a matter of hours!

Overall, attending this years Ploughing Championships was a very enjoyable experience and it was fantastic to be able to see so many companies and their innovations all in one place (field). Next year's event is planned to take place just outside Tullamore, so whilst it hasn't moved far it is definitely well worth a visit."
