Spatial NI Launch

Yesterday, Brendan Sheehy and Leon Hughes attended the Launch of Spatial NI at the Titanic Building, Belfast.

Spatial NI is the Northern Ireland portal for Geographic Information which has been developed by the Land and Property Services (LPS) in order to comply with the EU INSPIRE Directive. Its purpose is to allow ease of access to LPS base mapping and NI Geographic Information to the public sector and the citizen. It functions as a portal that offers:

  • A central location for storing NI public sector location data sets
  • The ability to view and create maps using OSNI mapping and aerial imagery

At the event, Simon Hamilton, the minister for Finance and Personnel, delivered the key note speech which was followed by a series of other notable speakers. These were followed by the unveiling of the new website and a demonstration of its features.

Attendees on the day were encouraged to try out Spatial NI and to produce some maps. To celebrate the launch of the site and to encourage more people to make use of its data a competition to win an iPad was also announced.

The launch was very well received by all in attendance who were impressed by its ease of use and the availability of good data. It is hoped that following the launch of the new site that more people will be encouraged to make use of the spatial data that is available via the LPS.
