Mallon Technology is pleased to announce the successful completion of 3 projects undertaken for Queen’s University Belfast.
The Hart Wright Biography and Photo Collection
The first project Mallon Technology were awarded was to digitally capture the ‘Hart Wright Biography’ and some 1500 bound and loose photographs, for the Special Collections and Archives department of the McClay Library at Queens University.
The first stage of the project involved capturing the book, which contained approximately 1000 pages, in digital format. This was done using our bespoke scanner before the images passed through image fixing software to assure a fully readable and coherent image.
The second stage of the project involved the onsite capture of the photographs in the university library. This was carried out by two of our experienced professional capture personnel to ensure the sensitive handling of the documents which were deemed too valuable to leave the premises.
The Thomas Moore Music Collection
This project involved the digital capture of the ‘Thomas Moore Music Collection’, which comprises of 45 volumes of music, containing approximately 50 pages per volume. This was an extremely delicate collection and included both bound and loose leaf material. The utmost care was taken throughout the project to ensure that the documents did not encore damage and were only handled by our trained data capture personnel.
The Ulster–Scots Collection
The final project undertaken for the McClay Library at Queen’s involved the digital capture of the ‘Ulster–Scots Collection’. This is made up of 29 volumes from three different authors; Percy, Ramsey and Hewitt, comprising of approximately 11,000 pages in total. Due to the valuable nature of the collection the images were captured onsite by one member of our digital capture team before the post processing of images was carried out offsite in our Cookstown office.
Outcomes
All 3 projects were undertaken to provide a secure backup and digital record of the collection to preserve them for future generations. They have also been placed on to the library’s internal intranet system to allow for simultaneous searching of texts and documents to facilitate easier access and allow for more effective research to be carried out by students and researchers alike.
