Wildfires are a growing threat to Ireland’s ecosystems, communities and infrastructure. Since 2017, Mallon Technology has monitored wildfires nationwide, combining satellite data with expert analysis to deliver consistent, high–quality information. Our clients use it to make informed environmental and safety decisions.
Automation for Speed, Experts for Accuracy
The best results come from pairing high–quality data with advanced automation and human judgement. Our wildfire monitoring service works in two stages:
- Automated workflows. Cloud–based workflows ingest and process satellite data as it becomes available, flagging potential fire events and burn anomalies.
- Expert visual verification. Automation gets us to a result quickly; our geospatial analysts then review it by eye. This quality–control step removes false positives, so the maps our clients receive give a clear and reliable picture of the ground.
New StoryMap: Mapping Burn Scars with Sentinel Imagery
We have published an ArcGIS StoryMap that follows the lifecycle of a wildfire incident, from first detection to a finished burn scar map. It covers three areas:
- Satellite detection. How optical and infrared data from the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Sentinel satellites reveal the affected area. Shortwave infrared bands are far less affected by smoke than visible light, which makes them well suited to mapping fires as they burn.
- Burn scar mapping. The methods our team uses to measure vegetation loss and delineate the burn boundary.
- Multi–source intelligence. How we combine satellite imagery, active fire hotspots and ground–truth contextual data to identify, track and report on wildfires.
