Improving Local Government Productivity with a Web GIS

Mallon Technology is delighted to announce the recent completion of a project in collaboration with Mid Ulster District Council (MUDC). The project involved the demonstration and use of Azimap, a web GIS with which Mallon Technology are exclusive resellers, to show how productivity and the completion of certain processes within the council’s GIS department could be dramatically improved.

The Problem

One of the services MUDC provides, is the collection of trade waste from 250 separate sites across the Dungannon area. The council had been collating information from their waste collections in Excel spreadsheets but were looking to digitise the information so it could be presented and analysed on a map.

The Project

To complete the project, GIS staff within MUDC used Azimap to:

  • Import a non spatial CSV as a new layer
  • Choose which attributes were ‘editable’ and ‘required’ dependent on the data
  • Saving the layer and showing it on a map
  • Plot trade waste sites on the map via a simple address search
  • Edit the database table entries within Azimap as required
  • Save and export the data in their required spatial format

The Benefits

By using Azimap, GIS staff at MUDC never had to leave the digitisation workflow to complete the task. This enabled them to increase productivity by 80% compared to using similar processes on the councils proprietary GIS. Further benefits from using Azimap, include:

  • Quick and simple process which anyone could complete
  • Significantly reduced the hours required to complete this time consuming work
  • Allowed staff more time to complete advanced GIS analysis
  • Data was exported to their preferred spatial format
  • No incomplete records due to completion of ‘required field’ attributes

Upon completion of the project, Nicky Doris, GIS Officer for MUDC had this to say about Azimap; “As a digitisation tool, Azimap was fantastic in comparison to the usual methods used to capture data. The digitisation workflow made the process extremely quick and accurate which is a priority for me. Added to this was the ability to complete each record fully without having to leave the application. It was perfect for this task.”
