A report recently released by the European Commission has revealed that only one year after the Copernicus programme began operation, it is already delivering economic, social, environmental and strategic benefits across a range of sectors.
The Copernicus programme is a cornerstone of the European Union’s efforts to monitor the Earth and its diverse ecosystems. Copernicus consists of a series of Earth Observation (EO) Satellites, which collect data across six thematic areas; land, marine, atmosphere, climate change, emergency management & security, through various Remote Sensing technologies. Since 2008, investments made in the Copernicus programme have reached €7.5 billion. By 2020, this investment is expected to have generated an economic benefit of €13.5 billion. Around €3.1 billion is expected to be generated by the downstream market.
The downstream market includes all actors involved in the exploitation of EO data, providing EO–related products and services to end–users. As a downstream service provider of imagery and data collected from the Copernicus programme, Mallon Technology has directly contributed to the economic benefits being delivered by Copernicus.

As the Copernicus Market Report shows, satellite generated data has helped to deliver benefits to a diverse range of industry sectors, including; precision agriculture, urban monitoring, ocean monitoring, forestry, insurance, oil and gas exploration and renewable energies. The benefits delivered from Copernicus is only expected to grow as more and more data is captured over the coming years.
