Ahead of next month’s Space Week, a major new art exhibition has been launched at Cork airport, that charts the impact of space on the past, present and future of Ireland and features imagery contributed by Mallon Technology colleague, Ian Hand.
On display throughout September, travelers passing through Cork airport will be treated to a showcase of stunning imagery captured from Ireland’s skies and from space. Featuring contributions and submissions from Irish research groups, observatories, amateur astro–photographers and Earth Observation specialists, the exhibit tells a visual story of astronomy in Ireland.
Ian’s contribution to the exhibit can be seen in the image to the right. It was captured by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel–2 multispectral satellite and shows the town of Drogheda, Co. Louth, leading into the mouth of the River Boyne. The image, shown in Shortwave Infrared, highlights that as well as producing stunning imagery, remote sensing also has a range of practical applications from monitoring crop health to flood prevention planning.
The exhibit is a fantastic collaborative achievement and represents a fantastic opportunity to share, with a wide audience, Ireland’s ancient astronomy sites, scientific prowess and dark sky heritage.
