Case Study

Coillte

The Client

Coillte is Ireland’s leading forestry company which was established under the Forestry Act 1988 to manage state owned forests commercially.  Its forests and land now extend to over 440,000 hectares.  Coillte help to enable government policy to be implemented in key areas such as renewables, infrastructure, industrial development and tourism.

The Problem

Coillte required a Geographical Information System to help manage and maintain all of the land under their control.  The Forest Inventory and Planning System (FIPS GIS) was developed by Mallon to fulfil this requirement.

What We Did

Mallon helped to develop a Forestry Inventory and Planning System (FIPS GIS).  The project saw Mallon provide services in three principal areas.

GIS Software Solution

This was built upon Microstation GeoGraphics and Oracle as they provided a comprehensive and scalable solution that could accommodate such a large variety of datasets.

System Support

Mallon provided Coillte with system maintenance, upgrades, technical support and data updates based on a Service Level Agreement.

Training Services

Mallon also provided a number of bespoke training courses at a variety of levels, from system user to administrator.  The courses included introduction to GIS training, FIPS GIS training and Oracle SQL Database training.

The Benefits

  • A single system for administration and planning of the forest inventory has made it easier to manage forest resources
  • Data is now easily updated and controlled
  • The FIPS GIS can be used as a spatial decision support system by an expert team
