Northern Ireland Water Service

Location: Belfast

Date: 2000 – 2003

In 2000 Mallon Technology won a contract with The Water Service to update their water distribution records from paper maps to a digital data set from the existing records. Digitised records were displayed against the appropriate Ordnance Survey digital background, which were also updated by incorporating new site plans.

This project involved the digitising of water service records held on acetate overlays and of different scale.  The records contained approximately 22,000 km of mains and other assets. Records varied in terms of accuracy and format depending on the division. Digital OS background maps, 13,238 in total and of different scales were utilised with both vector and raster formats to give a full coverage. Three primary feature types captured with associated attributes were Mains, Nodes and Fittings.

Benefits
On completion of the project The Water Service was supplied with a set of quality assured digital records and hard copy output.   The digital record of the distribution network was imported into a GIS and utilised for more efficient information retrieval and informed decision making.
